Two charged in shooting incident

Two men are facing charges in connection with a recent shooting at the Farmington Terrace apartment complex, with authorities citing a romantic dispute as the apparent motive for the incident.

Police had responded to the Farmington Avenue location just after 2:30 a.m. on Jan. 23 following multiple 911 reports of gunshots being fired. At the scene, officers found an unoccupied vehicle with several bullet holes, along with multiple shell casings nearby.

Police said witnesses provided a detailed description of the man who fired the shots and the vehicle in which he fled the scene. Surveillance footage also captured the incident.

As a result of the investigation, Bertram Ware, 34, of 161 Easton Ave. in Warwick, was arrested on Jan. 23. He is charged with carrying a pistol without a license, firing in a compact area, vandalism, and felony conspiracy.

According to police, Ware is a “known associate” of the Providence-based “Oriental Rascals” street gang, and had been released from prison on Jan. 21. He was arraigned Jan. 25 in Third District Court and presented as a probation violator in connection with a previous charge of violation of a restraining order. He was ordered held at the Adult Correctional Institution.

Also being charged is Luis Lopez, 33, of 69 Superior St., second floor, in Providence. He was arrested Jan. 28 in Providence, and faces counts of carrying a pistol without a license, firing in a compact area, vandalism, felony conspiracy, and possession of a firearm after being convicted of a crime of violence.

Lopez was due to be arraigned last week, and police indicated he was to be presented as a probation violator in connection with a 2013 drug charge.

A statement from Cranston police indicates that based on the investigation, “it is suspected that the motive behind the shooting was to enact retaliation against the owner of the damaged vehicle due to his relationship with Ware’s ex-girlfriend.”

“I commend the officers and detectives who investigated this shooting, as well as the witnesses who had the courage to come forward to offer their assistance,” Chief of Police Col. Michael Winquist said through the statement. “The reckless and violent behavior of these suspects endangered the residents of the Farmington Avenue neighborhood and apprehending them was of the highest priority of our police department.”
