Joined by local officials and members of the community, the Western Cranston Garden Club (WCGC) on Saturday dedicated a Blue Star memorial plaque at the Chafee Athletic and Recreational Complex on Hope Road. The Blue Star memorial project is sponsored by National Garden Clubs, and involves the placement of plaques in small gardens maintained by local clubs across the country. The goal is to create a “ribbon of loving memorial plantings across America” in honor of those who have served in the nation’s armed forces. Robert A. Casey served as the event’s master of ceremonies, while Boy Scout Troop 8 Cranston presented the colors and led the Pledge of Allegiance. National Garden Clubs Blue Star Chair Andrea Little and Mayor Allan Fung were among those who provided remarks, and WCGC co-presidents Linda Alves and Sharron Casey – who led the effort locally – unveiled the memorial plaque. Marissa Silva sang the national anthem, and the Rev. Katherine Mitchell provided the invocation and benediction. Ward 4 Councilman Mario Aceto and Parks and Recreation Director Tony Liberatore were also on hand. (Herald photos)
