(Exciting Marvel sequel)

The action starts before the credits as our heroes go into immediate battle with the bad guys and continues until the final all-out confrontation, leaving the door open for another sequel.

If you like the genre, you should enjoy this one. We like the clever humor tossed around by the Avengers (listen carefully when one of them comes face-to-face with a tractor). What we do like are the over-long battles that extend the movie to over two and a quarter hours.

Mark Ruffalo is back as Bruce Banner/the Hulk, one of the more complex characters whose future is left in the balance as the movie ends. His conflicted love affair with Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) adds a little heart to the violent story.

Chris Hemsworth’s Thor is fun to watch as his ego gets in the way at every turn. “Fortunately, I am mighty,” he proclaims in the heat of battle (you’ve got to be there).

Robert Downey Jr.’s glib Iron Man shines, as do the other members of the Avengers – Captain America, Hawkeye, The Vision, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver – trying to keep “peace in our time” against great odds.

The odds are that the metallic Ultron will have the big advantage over the Avengers, but this is sci-fi fantasy at the ultimate, so hold on to your seat and enjoy the conflicts. James Spader brings his sarcastic tone to the villainous Ultron, and Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury is back to help the Avengers save the day.

There are stretches between the action where the characters are given a chance to pontificate about artificial intelligence, an eye for an eye, and man versus machine.

Rated PG-13, with sci-fi action and violence and minor profanity, for which they are chastised.
