Arrest made following investigation into shots fired on Woodbine Street

A man has been arrested following an investigation into the apparent firing of shots from a handgun into a garage on Woodbine Street.

Luke Cabral, 30, of 156 Woodbine St., Apt. 2B, is charged with possession of a firearm after being previously convicted of a crime of violence. The charge is a felony, and Cabral – who police say was serving a suspended sentence at the time of his arrest – was ordered held without bail at his arraignment Monday in Third District Court.

According to a press release from Chief of Police Col. Michael J. Winquist, officers had recently responded to the area of Auburn and Woodbine streets following a report of shots being fired. Shell casings were recovered at the scene.

A subsequent investigation found evidence that five shots from a 9mm handgun had apparently been fired into a garage door next to 156 Woodbine St., and a forensic analysis indicated the shots had come from Cabral’s apartment.

Officers attempted to speak with the apartment’s occupants, according to the chief, but they were “uncooperative and refused to allow investigators inside.” A court-ordered search warrant was then obtained and executed on March 20 with the assistance of the department’s Special Reaction Team.

Police questioned two individuals found in the apartment, according to the chief’s release, and that led to Cabral’s arrest.

Winquist in the release credits “the alert witnesses who contacted the police to report the shots being fired.”

“The community cooperation is critical to the Cranston Police Department and in this case is directly responsible for the apprehension of this person allegedly responsible for this careless, dangerous and violent act committed in such close proximity to neighbors and their families,” the chief said.
