(Dark, stumbling submarine tale)

Jude Law stars as Robinson, a submarine pilot who loses his job when there is no more call for submarine pilots.

What to do? Well, why not assemble a motley crew of Brits, Americans and Russians, buy an old Russian sub, and set out on a quest for a sunken Russian sub that is in worse shape than the one that sank in Providence.

The Russians are a mean-spirited bunch, and only one speaks English. They are easier to understand with sub-titles than the thick accents of the Brits. How Robinson ever expected these renegades to work together is just one of the implausible aspects of this movie.

The sunken sub is rumored to be loaded with gold, but even though it lies at the bottom of the sea right near the Russian Navy, no one has tried to recover it. Robinson gets a wealthy businessman to bankroll the effort, never thinking that he might be used in his efforts.

The factions end up fighting and killing each other, arguing over the shares of the gold. They are all a bunch of nasty souls, except for one young lad who nearly gets them all killed.

This dark, mean-spirited, incredible tale goes on for nearly two hours. By the time it ends, you couldn’t care less what happens to most of the crew.

Rated R because of violence and profanity.
