Brutopia showcases beers, barbecue at Chamber’s Business After Hours

Brutopia might be best known as Cranston’s first and only brew pub, but a group of local business and professional people discovered the food’s pretty darn good there, too.

That all surfaced Monday evening during the Greater Cranston Chamber of Commerce’s July Business After Hours event at Brutopia Brewery & Kitchen, located at 505 Atwood Ave.

Sorbo Restaurant Group, headed by marketing and events director Megan Kenney, rolled out the red carpet for the night’s networking session and provided Chamber members and their guests with a special sampling of food offerings cooked in Brutopia’s hickory pit smoker.

While brews like Seedless Watermelon and Brutopia Bliss were among the more popular on Monday evening, men and women enjoyed baby-back pork ribs and smoked chicken wings that featured a variety of sauces.

Brutopia even treated Chamber members to hush puppies, sweet cornbread fritters shaped like clam cakes with Creole mayo, fried pickle chips with ranch dressing and pulled pork sliders.

Maureen M. Stolhammer, vice president/branch manager of Washington Trust’s Reservoir Avenue branch, and her guest Joyce Boomer as well as the bank’s Jo-Ann Harrington and Carrie Coren of Carrie Coren Design all enjoyed the tender baby-back ribs.

Attendees later learned the process of cooking those ribs, which are dry rubbed Memphis style. A menu notation reads: “We let you put the sauce on them.”

Mark D. Capuano, a native Cranstonian and vice president/branch manager of Bank Newport in East Greenwich and brother of New York Islanders head hockey coach Jack Capuano, offered: “You could certainly make a meal out of just the ribs.”

There’s much, much more on Brutopia Brewery & Kitchen’s menu, including salads, burgers and entrees like pan sear salmon, steak tips, fish and chips, smoked half chicken and a vegetarian mixed grill.

As for the brews, NBC10 account managers Kristin Garvey and Dana R. Truhan were “really impressed” with the Seedless Watermelon Lager, which brewers Alex Roskowski and Sam Walker explained is “our Bliss with fresh pureed and strained watermelon juice added for a fresh summertime flavor profile.”

Steve Riley of Next Home Real Estate, who served as the night’s greeter, offered: “This is a fun place – for everyone!”

Greg Borengasser of RTS Embroidery & Promotional Solutions and Ernie Pitochelli of Lyoness agreed and added: “Great brews, great food and especially great and friendly service.”

The night’s greatest testimonial, though, came from Coren of Carrie Coren Design, which is located at 160 Comstock Parkway in Cranston.

“This is my second time at a [Chamber] event,” Coren began. “I’m not a member yet, but the feeling here is great. It’s like a family – I’m going to join this Chamber.”
