The Cranston East ’Bolts fell to the Barrington Eagles, 60-44, on Monday afternoon at home.

Cranston East head coach Lloyd Bochner believes that his team has the ability to hang in a tough Division 1. “We have some talent offensively,” Bochner said. “Our issue is defense. If we play good defense, we can hang in games. We got outworked today and they were quicker and smarter than us. It definitely hurt us. They got second and third chances.”

Sarah Coutu led East with 14 points and McKenzie Richards and Maia Caito chipped in 11 each. For Barrington, Glory Ellison had a game-high 20 points and Andrea Kubas-Meyer followed with 18.

Barrington jumped out to a 4-0 lead on baskets from Ellison and Grace Coutu. East scored its first points when Caito made a free throw. A floater by Barrington’s Coutu while the shot clock expired put Barrington up 6-1. Next, Sarah Coutu buried a jumper to cut it to 6-3.

The teams traded baskets before Barrington’s Kubas-Meyer assisted to Ellison for a layup to put Barrington up 10-5. A good defensive stand by Barrington saw the shot clock expire on East. Seconds later, Kubas-Meyer received an inbound pass and scored a layup to put Barrington up seven.

Sarah Coutu brought it down for East and dished to Richards, who nailed a 3-pointer, pulling the ’Bolts within 12-8 with 8:24 left in the opening half.

However, Barrington used an 8-0 run to open up a 20-8 lead with 5:40 left in the half.

Bochner called a timeout for East and it seemed to get it back on track. Out of the breather, Sarah Coutu dished to Cousineau, who passed to Richards for a 3 ball, cutting the deficit to 20-11. On East’s next possession, Cousineau buried a shot from downtown to cut it to six.

Barrington sophomore guard Olivia Middleton made the first of two free throws before Barrington’s Ellison managed to get the offensive board and putback off the second one that missed, making it 25-16.

Sarah Coutu came slashing down the lane to cut the East deficit to seven with 1:36 to play in the half. On the ’Bolts’ next possession, Coutu hauled a long pass to Cousineau for a layup to cut it to five. East trailed Barrington, 27-20, at halftime.

The ’Bolts struck first in the second half when Sarah Coutu dished to senior Tatyana Correia for a bucket. A layup from Barrington’s Kubas-Meyer made it 29-22. Moments later, Sarah Coutu went inside to Correia to cut it to five. Then, Caito banged a jumper, cutting it to 31-28. Nonetheless, Kubas-Meyer hit two free throws to go back up five with 12:40 to play.

With 11:01 to play, Ellison was fouled by Sarah Coutu while driving to the basket and the junior forward made both shots from the charity stripe to go up seven.

A corner 3 from Middleton put Barrington up 10 with 9:25 left. Kubas-Meyer followed an East turnover with a jumper, giving Barrington a 42-30 edge. Then, Sarah Coutu nailed a shot from downtown for East to cut it to nine with 8:07 to play.

Seconds later, Barrington’s Alexandra Marinelli matched it with a 3 ball of her own. Another Barrington 3-pointer, this one from Kubas-Meyer, put Barrington on top, 48-33, with 6:31 left.

Barrington sailed to a 60-44 victory.

East is now 4-3 in league play, while Barrington stays perfect at 7-0.
