West unable to slow Huskies' balanced scoring attack

The Mt. Hope boys’ soccer team scored twice in each half and got goals from four different players en route to easing past Cranston West, 4-1, on Monday afternoon at the Hope Road Complex.

Facing a 4-0 deficit late in the game, Patrick Fearon tallied the Falcons’ lone goal in the final minutes after some good work from Suleman Bello and Mauro Veras. The late score gave West something positive to take away from a game in which it struggled to match the speed and physicality of the Huskies.

“We’re trying to build the discipline side of it and we’re learning how to play,” West head coach Martin Yarumian said. “We had some good moments in there, just not enough.”

West looked like the better team out of the gate, compiling more chances and possession time early, but Mt. Hope was able to weather that storm.

In the 12th minute, West senior captain Logan Inocencio had a break, but Mt. Hope’s defense quickly closed on him and his shot was stopped by a diving Brian Gamez.

Eight minutes later, the Huskies broke the scoreless tie, with Jeremy Lima sending a corner kick into the box and finding Richard DiFrenna all alone at the back post for an easy tap in.

Inocencio had an opportunity a couple of minutes later when West earned a direct kick from just outside of the box. His bid sailed just north of the crossbar, though, to preserve Mt Hope’s slim advantage.

That proved costly, as Mt. Hope answered with some substantial pressure of its own. And, in the 32nd minute, Jaxon Tamulaites weaved through multiple West defenders before firing a missile off the crossbar. Tamulaites’ shot didn’t find the back of the net, but it would ricochet off the bar to the foot of Trey Coroa, who tapped a shot into the empty net to make it 2-0.

Mt. Hope continued to ride that momentum into the second half.

In the opening minute, Andrew Simas outworked a defender near the goal, heading a pass to Travis Waleryszak, who volleyed a shot into the back of the net.

The Falcons pressed in the ensuing minutes in desperate need of getting on the board, and it nearly did.

Inocencio took another direct free kick, and this time he would miss by inches, nailing the crossbar.

That narrow miss again came back to hurt West, which surrendered another goal four minutes after that free kick.

Waleryszak headed a pass into traffic out in front and Quinn Baldwin-Kress won a positional battle before firing a shot past Gianluca Laurenza to push the lead out to 4-0.

Before Fearon scored for the Falcons late, chances were few and far between for the home team.

Twenty-seven minutes into the second half, West’s Javier Nunez put on a series of moves before his attempt at sneaking a shot inside the near post was robbed by a diving Gamez.

Veras also had a good opportunity in the late stages of the second half, but his shot was swallowed up by Gamez as well.

It wasn’t until the 37th minute of the second half that the Falcons were able to beat Gamez. A tremendous effort from Veras earned West a corner, and it would capitalize, with Bello directing a pass to Fearon at the back post for a goal.

Yarumian is hoping that his team’s late pressure will carry over into next game.

“That was definitely a positive note, which was really, really good,” Yarumian said. “It came off a hardworking play, a couple of guys getting involved and not giving up. That was a positive, and hopefully we have more of those plays in the future.”

West (2-5 in D-II) will look to get back in the win column today at 3:30 p.m. when it hosts North Smithfield (3-3).
