To the Editor:
Cranston’s Wellington Avenue, the section from Park Avenue to the Providence city line, is in deplorable condition. An extended part of it is cracked into tiny segments and resembles driving over a washboard, to date myself. It is a busy backroad section, along the railroad tracks, that is inviting for people to dump heavy trash and avoid paying for city pickup. City Hall has offered many hollow promises to resurface that section of Wellington Avenue. The most recent activity merely repainted the double no-passing lines.
A poorly lit Wellington Underpass exists near the Providence city line that should be a Cranston safety responsibility. The existing eight light fixtures are rarely all on during the night hours, but should all be on 24 hours a day to ensure safe passage. When entering the Underpass from either direction there is a momentary blind spot. In that moment there could be another car, a pile of trash, a bicyclist, or a pedestrian in the roadway that the driver would not see until too late. Appropriate warning signs and speed limit signs should be posted.
The resurfacing of this section of Wellington Avenue, at the very least the washboard section, should be on the priority list, not the political list.
