The Cranston East All-Stars exploded for eight runs in the sixth inning to beat Elmwood, 14-5, on Thursday night at Speck Field in the 11/12-year-old District 1 All-Star bracket.

Gabriel Rodriguez was the starting pitcher for Elmwood and Anthony Decotis started for Cranston East.

In the first inning, Elmwood came out strong. Rodriguez started with a double in the first inning, scoring two runs and first baseman Angel Vazquez added a single and knocked in a run. Elmwood led 4-0 after the first inning.

Then in the second inning, it was Cranston East’s turn. Second baseman Riley Souza started the inning with a double of his own, scoring two runs and cutting the lead to 4-2. After another run scored on a steal of home, Matt Fontes hit an RBI single to score Souza and tie the game at 4-4.

Then, it was Elmwood’s turn again. In the bottom of the third, shortstop Jose Sierra hit a solo home run over the centerfield wall to give Elmwood back the lead at 5-4.

Cranston East would tie it at 5-5 in the fourth inning when a run scored from third, due to a throwing error by Elmwood’s catcher Thomas Flori, who was trying to catch a runner who was leading off of first base.

Allan Kevorkian hit an RBI single to put Cranston East up 6-5 in the fifth inning. It would never relinquish the lead from there.

In the sixth inning, Cranston East’s offense erupted. Brenden Vitale, Will Rush and Jack Delahanty hit back-to-back-to-back home runs to blow the game wide open.

“We had a one-run lead and we were hoping we could get an insurance run and then Brenden led off with the home run and all of a sudden everybody just joined in the fun,” Cranston East head coach Bill Rush said.

Vitale would register three RBIs in the game.

Delahanty expressed his feelings on his team’s sixth inning barrage.

“It felt awesome,” Delahanty said.

Centerfielder and the coach’s son, Will Rush, was patient at the plate while waiting for a pitch to hit during Cranston East’s big inning.

“It was a great inning,” Rush said. “The guy wasn’t throwing very hard so I was just thinking ‘stay back’ and then I got the fastball right down the middle and I stayed back and hit it.”

Elmwood head coach Ramon Rasario thought his team could have played better.

“They didn’t play to their potential, but we were okay,” Rasario said. “The errors are what did us in.”

Elmwood was eliminated from the tournament following the loss.

Cranston East was also eliminated from the bracket with a 5-0 loss to Mt. Pleasant in its next game of the tournament.
