Cranston Public Library announces Oct. 22 ‘Haunted History’ tour of Oak Lawn Branch

The Cranston Public Library is excited to announce “History is Alive: A Haunted History Tour of the Oak Lawn Branch Library.”

The event, which will present both historical facts and paranormal investigation findings, will take place at the Oak Lawn Branch on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 6:30 p.m. Guests will explore the long history of the building, from its early days as the Oak Lawn School (1838) to its transition into a library in 1896.

In addition to the traditional history, the Oak Lawn Branch facility has a paranormal history as well. Disembodied voices, flickering lights, falling books, and more have been experienced by both library visitors and staff.

“We believe our library has paranormal activity because of its rich history,” branch librarian Stef Blankenship said. “So many children and families have been here, it makes sense that they would want to come back and visit.”

An initial investigation into these claims was conducted by the Atlantic Paranormal Society (TAPS) in June 2014, and since four additional investigations have taken place, including one which was featured on an episode of Ghosts R N.E.A.R. with the New England Anomalies Research and Investigations group.

October’s event will be led by Ocean State Paranormal’s Buddy Thayer. Ocean State Paranormal has held two of the five paranormal investigations at the library, and were able to collect audio recordings (better known as Electronic Voice Phenomena, or EVPs), video clips, and more – all of which will be made available to the public at “History is Alive.”

So, how spooky does the library get?

“We are never afraid here,” Blankenship said. “But we are intrigued, and we wanted to have a ghost tour for the public because they are curious about our claims. They feel something in here too and ask what we have uncovered.”

Refreshments will be served at the event and all ages are welcome. The event is free, with a suggested $5 donation to the Cranston Public Library Association. Registration is encouraged and can be made by calling the library at 401-942-1787. Sign-ups begin Oct. 4.

The Oak Lawn Branch is located at 230 Wilbur Ave.
