A West Virginia man has died after his tractor trailer went off the roadway and into the woods off Route 295 southbound in Johnston.
Dwight Greenleaf, 59, Martinsburg, W.V., passed away shortly after being transported to Rhode Island Hospital, according to Rhode Island State Police.
The crash was reported just before 6:30 a.m. Thursday. According to state police, an investigation found Greenleaf suffered a medical emergency and lost control of the tractor trailer roughly 200 feet north of Exit 4 (Plainfield Pike). The vehicle then veered right and traveled across the highway, entering the right shoulder and continuing on for 220 feet southwest before entering the wood line and striking a tree.
Witnesses told police Greenleaf exited the vehicle, said he had fainted, and then collapsed to the ground. Good Samaritans, state troopers and Johnston fire and rescue personnel performed CPR before Greenleaf was taken to the hospital.
No other vehicles were involved, police said. The tractor trailer’s gas tank had ruptured during the crash, and cleanup at the scene continued until 10:30 a.m.
