East and West compete in cross country class meets

The Cranston East and West boys’ and girls’ cross country teams completed in the class meets this past weekend at Ponaganset High School, with the East boys’ coming through with the top performance.

The ’Bolts took eighth place in the Class A championships, with sophomore Jeudy Guzman leading the way with a 35th-place finish. East had a total score of 245. La Salle won the race thanks to five runners finishing in the top seven.

Coming in after Guzman was Mohammed Chaghlil in 39th, Alex Sparks in 56th, Darol Groeneveldt in 57th, Eric Hellested in 58th, Aidan Nolan in 59th and Will Rogers in 65th.

West also competed in that race and came in 13th place, with junior Sam Walmsley setting the pace in 70th. Ben Boffi finished 76th, Brad Thies was 77th, Mike Doire was 79th, Keevan Winters was 80th, Jesse Chan was 89th and Charles Pisaturo was 90th.

On the girls’ side, West led the way with a ninth-place showing Class A. East finished next in 10th place. La Salle won the girls’ race as well, as the Rams had the first three runners across the finish line.

The top runner in the city was East’s Shayna Cousineau, a sophomore who finished in 42nd. The next two runners across were Marina DeAngelis in 46th and Francesca Laurenza in 50th, both from West. After that, East’s Casey Nolan took 58th, West’s Marina Carro took 61st, West’s Sarah Lemay finished 63rd and West’s Cameron Meola finished 64th. The Falcons also got a 69th-place finish from Francesca Nencka, with East’s Ariel Wynn in 71st, Julia Fagundes in 73rd and Cassidy Greig in 86th.
