The Cranston East field hockey team accomplished a lot of firsts on Monday against Rocky Hill.
The ’Bolts got their first point of the season, as they tied the Mariners 1-1. That snapped a seven-game losing streak to begin the year.
In the process, East also scored its first goal of the season. Amelia Lavalle found the back of the goal, while Brittney Bidwell assisted. East set a season-high in shots on net with 11.
In goal for the ’Bolts, Shoshana Adler continued her strong season with 10 more saves. The game was one of East’s best defensive efforts of the season, too, as it was just the second game that it has surrendered fewer than two goals.
Rocky Hill is 2-5-1, and East is 0-7-1.
The ’Bolts were scheduled for a game on Wednesday against winless Toll Gate, giving them their best opportunity for another first this week – a win.
The results of that game were unavailable at press time.
Falcons suffer first loss
The Cranston West girls’ volleyball team jumped out to a 5-0 start on the season, setting up a showdown with fellow unbeaten East Greenwich this past Friday.
The two teams will meet again later in the season, but round one went to the Avengers.
West lost 3-1, as it dropped the first two games 25-19 and 25-18, staved off defeat with a 29-27 game three win and then lost 25-18 in game four.
The defeat dropped West down to second place in Division II-South at 5-1, while EG sits atop the league at 7-0. Cranston East is right behind the Falcons with a 4-2 mark.
There are only two teams in the subdivision that West hasn’t played now, and it will take them both on this week as the season reaches the halfway point. The Falcons were scheduled to take on Pilgrim, which is 3-3, on Tuesday, with results unavailable at press time.
The other team is West Warwick, which West will host on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
The season’s second East-West match-up is Wednesday, Oct. 8 at East.
