Falcons fall to Hawks, still searching for first win

The Cranston West boys’ hockey team entered Saturday night’s game in search of its first win of the season, but it came up empty.

Coming in with a record of 1-1 to start the season, the Bishop Hendricken hockey team responded well after a tough loss to La Salle the previous week, securing a 7-0 shutout win against the Falcons on Saturday night.

West fell to 0-4 on the season.

Hendricken head coach Jim Creamer was impressed by his team’s effort in the game and felt that they showed a great deal of progress.

“It was a good game for us and we played well, probably as well as we have played in a while,” Creamer said.

Falcons’ starting goalie Anthony Lancellotti was put to work early in the game and spent most of the first period defending against the Hawks’ many scoring chances. Lancellotti made some scrambling saves in the first and his steadiness soon began to falter. Lancellotti had seven saves in the loss and was eventually replaced by freshman goalie Darren DeAngelis, who made eight saves in relief.

Midway through the first period, the Hawks found themselves with a tremendous opportunity when they went on the first power play of the night. The five-on-four man advantage did not last long, as sophomore forward Pat Creamer notched the first goal of the night. Junior forward Reilly Miller had the assist on the power play goal.

With the final minutes of the first period winding down, Miller found himself with another opportunity, finishing off a nice feed from senior defenseman Jason Comeau to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead.

The surge of goals did not rattle the Falcons, who continued to battle while looking for a goal to carry some momentum into the second period. However, they couldn’t cut into their deficit.

“I give [West] a lot of credit,” Jim Creamer said. “They’re a tough team to play, they battled all the way through and they were blocking shots late in the game. It was good for us and they’re a tough opponent to play against—they play really hard, they make it tough.”

Much like the opening minutes of the first period, the Falcons found themselves fighting off shots in their own zone, and within a few minutes, the Hawks had added a third goal. This time it was freshman defenseman Matthew Rickard, assisted by Brandon Mitchell and Eric Edwards.

The early surge of goals also sparked a series of penalties and the Hawks soon found themselves in a five-on-three disadvantage. The Hawks remained aggressive and dominant on the penalty kill and even found some chances to score.

Shortly after, the Falcons were tested with a shorthanded situation of their own.

With less than five minutes left in the second period, the Hawks lit up the scoreboard again with another goal from Reilly, assisted by Pat Creamer and sophomore Sam Milnes.

The third and final period brought another rush of goals for the Hawks, with tallies from Mitchell and senior captain Alex Leite.

The fifth goal of the night was assisted by sophomore forward Ryan King, while Leite’s shorthanded goal was unassisted. Reilly completed a hat trick with a goal assisted by sophomore defenseman Bryce Dolan.

The Hawks completed the game with an unyielding effort from senior goalies Matthew Kenneally and Cameron Doomany, who made a combined total of nine saves.

The Falcons will return to action on Saturday when they welcome first-place La Salle to Cranston Ice Rink for a 7 p.m. tilt, while the Hawks will host Mount St. Charles on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Thayer Arena.
