(Actresses replace actors in silly comedy)

If you like the original “Ghostbusters,” you will probably like the latest version, which substitutes four funny actresses for four funny actors. The problem is the story is so silly and stupid.

Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones are the Ghostbusters, who see themselves as scientists in search of the paranormal. The four work well together, filling in with some clever patter in between fighting green monsters that shoot green goo all over them.

There are some good special effects and a finale that has the monsters inhabiting bodies and growing to giant sizes as they destroy New York City.

Original Ghostbusters Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd both make brief appearances as a debunker and a cab driver, respectively. But all of that is not enough to make an original, absorbing movie that goes on too long.

There are clever moments. The first sighting at Aldrich Manor (not the one in Warwick) grabs your attention, and the Ghostbusters’ male secretary (Chris Helmsworth) provides eye candy for the ladies in the audience, but the battles go on too long.

We’ll give them an A for effort, but still couldn’t wait for the last ghost to be annihilated.

Rated PG-13, with nothing much to worry about. McCarthy pretty much behaved herself throughout.
