Girl Scouts host woodworking workshop

As a special event, the Girl Scouts from Cranston Troops 28 and 1260 hosted some very special guests at their recent meeting.

Susan Sparks, Donna Parrillo and Gail Connolly from the women’s division of the Ocean Woodturners (www.oceanwoodturners.com) came to the meeting to teach the girls how to make a pen out of wood. By the end of the meeting, each girl had made her own chrome-plated, Sierra-style, rollerball working pen, complete with replaceable ink.

Each girl had the opportunity to choose the type of wood they’d like to make their pen out of, and they learned techniques such as beveling, sanding and oiling the wood as they worked one-on-one with their guests. In addition to creating their pens, the girls were able to learn more about the art of basket making from Connolly, who has her own basket making business (www.ACKpack.net). Connolly showed the scouts other types of art that can be created using the same basket making techniques, including bracelets and mirrors.

“All of the girls had fun. This was a fantastic time,” Girl Scout leader Jessica Tate said.

The uniqueness of the workshop appealed to the Girl Scouts, and each asked for future events to be planned around the art of woodturning and basket making.

“I loved it because it was fun, and it was a unique experience,” Madison Evans said. “I love to try new things, and this is totally something I’d love to do in the future.”

The girls are looking forward to the 2015-16 year, for more woodworking events to be held in the future.
