Hackett achieves new feat at Abilene Christian

Cranston West alumna Allie Hackett has accomplished many things in her track career, but one thing that remained unchecked on her to-do list was winning an outdoor mile at the collegiate level.

On Sunday, the ex-Falcon was able to grab her pen and check that particular box, claiming top spot for Abilene Christian at the John Jacobs Invitational in Norman, Oklahoma.

Hackett broke the tape in four minutes, 49.04 seconds, barely ahead of Oklahoma pair Belle Wallace and Kelsey McKee, who joined her on the podium six and nine one-hundredths of a second behind, respectively.

The triumph was her fourth of the outdoor season, which has been highlighted so far by a pair of sparkling performances in the 5,000-meter race.

On March 24, Hackett set a new school record in the event at the Texas Tech Open in Lubbock, Texas, finishing the race on top in 16 minutes, 31.08 seconds and helping to achieve an Abilene Christian sweep of the top three places in the process.

Joining her on the podium that day was her twin sister and fellow Cranston West graduate Michaela, who finished in second with a time of 17 minutes, 28.41 seconds.

Then, one week later, Hackett improved on that effort at the Texas Relays in Austin, shaving off more than 10 seconds off her previous best to win in 16 minutes, 19.56 seconds, which was at the time the third-fastest performance in Division I this season.

On the heels of that effort, the Southland Conference selected Hackett as its women’s outdoor track athlete of the week for the second time this spring, to go with her six previous honors garnered during the cross-country and indoor track campaigns.

Conley providing offensive boost for Wildcats

After a 3-5 start to the 2016 campaign, the Johnson and Wales women’s lacrosse team has caught fire as of late, winning its last six in a row while outscoring its opponents 122-40 during that stretch.

One player that was able to partake in this offensive outburst for the Wildcats was former Cranston West standout Natalie Conley, who is usually picking up ground balls and causing turnovers in the defensive half of the field rather than scoring goals at the other end.

However, during JWU’s April 19 contest versus St. Joseph’s of Connecticut, Conley managed to etch her name onto the scoresheet, finding the back of the net for the first time in her lacrosse career with six seconds remaining in the first half to cap off a 15-0 start to proceedings.

The Wildcats finished the afternoon on the giving end of a 23-3 demolition of the Blue Jays, with Conley further adding a pair of ground balls to her personal ledger.

After last Saturday’s 16-15 home nail-biter versus Lasell, a pair of road contests remain for Johnson and Wales in the regular season, starting with Tuesday evening’s clash with Rivier before taking on Emmanuel to close out the slate this upcoming Saturday.
