‘Inspiration of the Soul’: Local author presents collection of bilingual poetry

The popular local, Dominican-American author Ana Arelys Cruz Cabrera presented her latest bilingual poetry collection, ”Inspiration of the Soul/Inspiración del Alma,” at the Cranston Central Library on Sept. 15.

The collection focuses on the subjects of family, identity and love.

Cruz Cabrera was the keynote speaker for the 2013 Dominican Independence and Heritage Award Committee of Rhode Island (DIHACRI). She is an active promoter of Dominican cultural awareness.

The room was comprised of fans, family and friends to celebrate the new book’s release.

Opening remarks were provided by friend Carmen Jusino Diaz, who spoke about the content of the book.

“This book speaks to what is hidden in our hearts – what melts our souls,” she said.

Diaz said Cruz Cabrera is an “inspiration to all of us. I am proud of her integrity, she has been my friend for six years.”

Poetic colleague Christine O’Neil Harrison said she was honored and proud when Cruz Cabrera asked for her comments on the book.

“She has a strong poetic voice. She speaks in two languages about love, family and patriotism. Her poetry allows the reader to feel what they are reading,” she said.

Cruz Cabrera recited a poem from her new book, entitled “Missing you Mom/Extranandote Mama.” The poem addresses how she misses her mother, and the simple things her mother used to do to bring love, comfort and support.

A touching part of the evening was when Cruz Cabrera had two men recognized for the dedication to their roles as husbands and fathers.

State Rep. Robert Jacquard of Cranston presented special citations to Eugenio de Jesus Monsanto del Valle and Ernesto Diaz.

“These men represent what a true man is. They are there when their families need them, to accompany them on their journeys through life – first steps, teaching to ride a bike, first day of school and at the alter. These men are on a mission of love,” Cruz Cabrera said.

Cruz Cabrera’s books are frequently printed bilingually. “Inspiration of the Soul” will be her third book, but her first collection of poetry. Previous publications include “Tourist Guide: Santo Domingo y Providence” (2012) and “Contrast of Two Cities, Providence and SantoDomingo/Contraste de dos Ciudades, Santo Domingo y Providence” (2011).
