King shines in final game at Salve

Posted

Cranston native John King made a key early contribution on the occasion of his last home game as a Salve Regina player, helping the Seahawks to record a 58-56 triumph over Western New England on Feb. 17.

King was honored before tip-off alongside three other departing seniors and started the contest despite having logged only 22 minutes of playing time for the season prior to Salve’s tilt with the Golden Bears.

Once the game was underway, the senior forward went to work quickly on the glass, notching two rebounds before starting his quest to find his shooting stroke from beyond the arc.

King’s first two attempts failed to go in, but the third time proved to be the charm, sparking a 25-4 run and transforming a 5-5 deadlock into a 30-9 runaway in the Seahawks’ favor.

However, the presumptive blowout did not eventuate, and Western New England steadily chipped away at the deficit until they tied the contest at 56 apiece with 17 seconds remaining.

The game looked like it was heading to overtime, but Barrett Hanlon – the only non-senior to start the contest – calmly sank a jump shot with five seconds left to give Salve its first win since Jan. 24, when the Seahawks soared over Roger Williams, 80-67.

King retained his place in the starting lineup for the final game of his college basketball career when Salve took on Curry last Saturday, recording two points in 11 minutes of play, as the Colonels outlasted the Seahawks, 84-80, in overtime.

Allen earns America East runner-up

Cranston West graduate Bobby Allen fell short in his attempt to repeat as the best runner over one mile in the America East Conference, finishing as runner-up last weekend in the conference’s championship meet.

The UMass-Lowell senior crossed the line in four minutes, 13.29 seconds, less than a second behind New Hampshire’s Kevin Greene.

In addition to the second-place he garnered in the mile, Allen ran the anchor leg in the distance medley relay, helping the River Hawks to a third-place finish in a time of nine minutes, 59.20 seconds.

Pair of former West wrestlers ranked at RIC

A pair of Cranston West alums now competing for Rhode Island College are ranked in the latest New England Wrestling Association coaches’ poll. Ricondo Cole is second in the 141-pound weight class, while Shawn Giblin is third in the 149-pound division.
