The MAE Organization for the Homeless will hold its third annual fundraising gala, “Rags to Riches,” on Friday, Nov. 4 at the Renaissance Hotel in Providence.

The event, which runs from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m., will raise funds to support programs to serve individuals experiencing homelessness or who are at high risk for being homeless, primarily in the Greater Providence area.

The keynote speakers will be Michael G. Cooley, author of “Rock Bottom: From the Streets to Success” and Alexandrea Gonzales. The event will include dinner, music and dancing with DJ Valentina, a dance performance by RI Latin Dance, and silent and live auctions. Organizers have a goal of raising $30,000.

“The MAE Gala helps the foundation to raise much needed dollars to help those in need. MAE is all about helping our homeless children, youth and adults, and our veterans in the healing of mental illness, mind, body, and spirit,” said Martina Javid, the group’s founder and president. “We are here to support them in getting stronger via many holistic programs so that they too can become productive members of society and assist them into transitioning from homelessness to permanent housing.”

Event sponsors are The Renaissance Hotel, Ocean State Cardiovascular and Vein Center, Woonsocket, Jacob Belt and the Freedom Equity Group, and Cooley.

The emcee for the evening is Amy Diaz, Rhode Island’s winner of “The Amazing Race” and senior associate at PageantPrep. The auctioneer is Barbara Morse Silva, NBC 10 Healthcheck reporter and weekend anchor.

MAE’s goal is to impact homeless individuals by assisting and facilitating in finding permanent solutions while providing hot meals, toiletries, shoes, transportation, tents, and creative and holistic program opportunities. Funds raised will support these services as well as expand weekly street outreach efforts for veterans and those who are chronically homeless.

MAE’s board members are Javid, of Coventry; Cooley, vice president, also of Coventry; Sterk Zaza, of Providence, secretary; Meri Kaufman, of East Greenwich, management; Christina Roberts, of Wyoming, R.I., outreach director; Lev Poplow, of Cranston, fundraising director; Jacob Belt, of Providence, fundraising chair; and Saira Hussain, of Warwick, senior volunteer outreach.

“The clients we help are everywhere – Providence, Warwick, Cranston, Johnston – and we anticipate expending to more areas in Rhode Island by 2017,” Javid said.
