Olson, Groccia lead ’Bolts past Tigers

Posted

The Cranston East girls’ lacrosse team emerged victorious over winless Tiverton on Monday afternoon, 8-5, to snap a five-game skid and improve to 3-5 on the season.

The ’Bolts have had some trouble finding the back of the net in recent weeks, but senior captain Sara Olson and junior Stephanie Groccia scored two goals apiece to pace East’s offensive attack.

Cheyenne Tillison, Samantha Levy, Abbegail DeSista and Amanda Hay also tallied one goal each.

In net, senior Briana Stewart turned aside five shots.

Cranston West also defeated Tiverton, 14-7, on Saturday night. The Falcons sit a half game ahead of the ’Bolts in the standings at 3-4.

East and West will meet at Cranston Stadium at 3:30 p.m. today.

West boys’ lacrosse falls to Portsmouth

Despite getting three goals and four assists from Trent Colford, the Cranston West boys’ lacrosse team fell to 7-1 Portsmouth, 12-7, on Friday.

The Falcons are still in good shape in the standings despite the loss, sitting at 4-2 with a bulk of the schedule still to be played. They are currently tied atop the Division-II-North standings with Wheeler.

In Friday’s loss, Cam Bent also added a pair of goals, while Tom Serabian and Joe DelMastro scored a goal apiece.

West hosted Cumberland on Tuesday, but results were unavailable at press time. It will travel to 1-4 Mount St. Charles today for a 3:30 p.m. start.

West tennis falls to .500 with loss to Wheeler

The Cranston West boys’ tennis team fell, 5-2, to Wheeler on Monday afternoon to drop to 4-4 on the season.

The Falcons faced an uphill battle against undefeated Wheeler, but were able to get wins in singles from sophomore Jake Meyerson and senior Chris Parnagian.

Meyerson defeated Danish Azam 7-6, 3-6, 6-4, while Parnagian edged Charlie Woolsey 7-5, 6-4.

The Falcons now sit in the middle of the pack in a very competitive Division-II-B.

The B subdivision is much stronger than the A subdivision, as five teams in D-II-B have winning records, as opposed to just one for D-II-A.

But amidst some strong teams, West is more than holding its own.

West was at Chariho on Tuesday, but results were unavailable at press time. It will be back in action today at 3:30 p.m., when it hosts North Smithfield.
