Park View students take part in annual Career Day

The students at Park View Middle School spent last Thursday morning exploring a multitude of career path options during the annual Career Day event organized by the school’s guidance department.

Dressed in some of their most professional clothing, coinciding with “Dress Up Day” for Spirit Week, the students arrived for the kick-off assembly first thing in the morning. Principal Michael Crudale and Superintendent Dr. Judith Lundsten welcomed the students and introduced this year’s keynote speakers – Mark Eaton, a former NHL player and developing coach for the Chicago Blackhawks, and Bob Deraney, the coach for Providence College women’s hockey.

Following the keynote speakers, the students spent the next several hours rotating by homeroom through a series of speakers, spanning four sessions each lasting for 20 minutes. During each session, the speakers discussed their current career as well as the path that got them there. They discussed other jobs they may have held previously and the education or coursework that they may have needed to complete in order to secure their job. Many also discussed average pay in their field and current job market opportunities. Many involved the students in their demonstrations, and there were student ambassadors assisting with the event.

The day culminated with a performance by the Rhode Island Navy Band Pop Ensemble. Park View recognized the many sponsors and supporters of the event, including Jewel Healy, Whole Foods Market Cranston, and Johanna Croteau, Chipotle, Warwick, both of whom donated items for the speakers’ gift bags.

Speakers for the day were Dave Craven, special assistant to the attorney general; Teddy Dumican, Ocean Pride Seafood; Amanda Duncan and Dan Ferrara, Realtors; Karen Emma, financial advisor; Michael K. Galvin and Cheryl Manzi, Aveda Institute; Stephany Hessler, Save the Bay; Tara Higgins, clinical pharmacy director; Capt. William Jamieson, Rhode Island State Police; Nick Lefebvre, Citizen Wing Food Truck; Vinny Messina, Gianfranco’s Ristorante; Stephanie Mills, photographer; David Mollo, Whole Foods Market; Alana Parenteau, principal, DeLasalle Middle School; Michelle Parenteau, interior designer; Jill Parrett, environmental specialist; Rob Rasso, vet technician; Monique Richards, MAC Makeup; Frank Simonelli, president of Simonelli Homes; Laurelin Sitterly, coordinator, Roger Williams Park Zoo; Jackie Tomasso, nurse; JoAnna Zarcarian and Nancy Seale, RI Credit Union; Matt Zarella, K-9 search and rescue sergeant; Detective Fabio Zuena, Providence Police Department; and Dan Macera, Pappas Physical Therapy.
