Park View trains new crop of NEED student leaders

Posted

Joanne Spaziano, mathematics educator for the Phoenix team at Park View and faculty advisor for the National Energy Education Development Project (NEED) at the school, has begun training a new set of student leaders. Last month, the students in the English Language Learners program at Park View began their training with Spaziano and several student leaders who are already trained in the science education program.

According to the program website (www.need.org), the philosophy behind NEED is “kids teaching kids” and encouraging students to explore. NEED trains and assists teachers in harnessing the energy of the classroom – the energy of students.

In January, ELL students participated in a daylong training that included learning chants about renewable and non-renewable energy, doing a variety of hands-on science experiments, playing BINGO and energy jeopardy, and learning about energy conservation and efficiency. In total, 20 students participated, including the trainers and the trainees.

Some of the topics covered included biomass, garbage, renewable and non-renewable energy, wind, solar energy and geothermal energy.

“There’s a lot of intense English immersion today,” said Spaziano. “The students will all take a post-learning poll to gauge their learning.”

Those students trained will eventually become student leaders teaching other students both at the middle school and eventually at the elementary school level.
