Peters Elementary installs new safety patrolcrew

Recently, George J. Peters Elementary School installed their newest crop of Safety Patrol students, with the help of Diana Imondi Dias, Education specialist from AAA, and Cranston Police Department's Colonel Michael Winquist, Matt Davis, Derek DiMaio, Robert Santagata and Peter Leclerc.

According to Lisa Milson of the Cranston Family Center/COZ, the students were first trained outside at their posts before heading inside to the multi-purpose room for a presentation from Imondi Dias and the police officers.

"You're going to serve as an extra set of eyes on the playground and in the hallways," Imondi Dias said. "You're going to be role models and you're going to be called upon to use your leadership skills."

She asked the police officers to speak to the students about what makes a good leader during their presentations. Officer Matt Davis told the students that good leaders listen to their teachers and their parents and follow instructions.

"Some day you may be in a leadership role in your community," Officer Davis said.

Officer Peter Leclerc agreed about the importance of being a good listener.

"You can't hear what people are saying if you don't listen to them, and then you won't know what to do to help them," Officer Leclerc said.

Colonel Winquist told the students that he wanted to be a police officer because his father was a police officer before him.

"I also wanted to be part of a team, to be a good teammate, to put others before myself," Colonel Winquist said.

He cautioned the students that the job they were about to embark on was a big one, with a lot of responsibility.

"You will need to lead by example," he said. "You have to be willing to work hard."

The students were then called upon to take their oath, receive their badges and their eye-catching bright yellow uniforms. Each student was able to shake the hand of the Colonel and give a salute before posing for a group photo with the officers and Imondi Dias.
