OFF THE

SHOULDER

Rhode Island State Police are investigating a crash involving a State Police trooper and his cruiser that happened on March 20 around 7:23 p.m. on Route 295 in Cranston.

The initial investigation revealed Trooper Nicholas Martin was traveling south in the right travel lane of Route 295 on his way to a rollover accident in the area of Exit 2 south. Martin saw the crashed car on the shoulder of the high-speed lane. He was attempting to move from the right travel lane into the left when an unknown vehicle in the left lane began to break hard and suddenly. To avoid striking the vehicle directly in front of him, Martin swerved to the left and into the snow covered left shoulder. Martin lost control of the cruiser and struck the heavy brush and small trees along the base of the ledge. The cruiser came to rest in the brush, facing southwest.

Martin was treated at Rhode Island Hospital and released. State police said the crash occurred during a period of snow and sleet, and the slick, icy roads might have been a factor.

“The safety of our Troopers is our number one priority. By wearing his seat belt, Trooper Martin set the example and avoided serious injury,” State Police Col. Steven G. O’Donnell said.

DOG DIES IN FIRE

A dog was reportedly killed in a house fire on Seven Mile Road on Saturday afternoon.

The blaze at the single-family home began after noon, according to reports. None of the home’s occupants were injured, and officials continue to investigate the cause.
