Chief: No criminal act in stabbing incident

A June 17 incident that led a woman to be hospitalized with a stab wound was not criminal in nature, according to police.

Chief of Police Col. Michael Winquist said in an email last week that after further investigation of the reported early-morning stabbing at 1068 Oaklawn Ave., “it has been determined that the injury was not the result of a criminal act. The residents of the neighborhood can be assured that their safety is not compromised and there are no perpetrator(s) at large.”

The 36-year-old woman involved was reportedly taken to Rhode Island Hospital and underwent surgery, although her injuries were not believed to be life threatening. Police did not go into further detail regarding the circumstances of the incident.

3 charged in weekend crashes

Serious car crashes on Friday and Saturday have resulted in charges against three people.

The first crash, which occurred Friday night at the intersection of Laurel Hill and Maplewood avenues, resulted in four people being hospitalized.

Police said Steven McCarthy, 22, of 666 Dyer Ave., Apt. 2, was fleeing the scene of a domestic incident in which he allegedly punched his girlfriend in the face and threatened her life. He was in a vehicle being driven by his roommate, 22-year-old Devin Ford, when it ran a stop sign and struck another vehicle, which in turn struck and flipped a pickup truck onto its side.

Ford was issues a summons for a charge of driving with a suspended license, with additional complaints pending. McCarthy was charged with domestic simple assault and domestic disorderly conduct.

In the second incident, which occurred early Saturday morning, police say Joey Duccas, 26, of 10 Pleasant St. in Plainfield, Conn., was traveling east on Wilbur Avenue when he lost control of his pickup truck, struck a parked car and pushed it into a garage, which then collapsed onto both vehicles.

Duccas was extricated from the truck by emergency responders and transported to Rhode Island Hospital. He has been charged with driving under the influence and refusal to submit to a breath test.

Man pleads no contest to unemployment fraud

A Providence man has pleaded no contest to receiving more than $27,681 in unemployment insurance benefits while working for a Cranston company.

Esteban Miliano, 41, with a last known address of 107 Henrietta St. in Providence, entered the plea on two counts of obtaining more than $1,500 under false pretenses in Providence Superior Court. Under the terms of his plea agreement, he received a suspended seven-year prison sentence with probation and was ordered to pay full restitution to the state.

According to the office of Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin, Miliano received the unemployment benefits while working for Sitecon Corporation between Feb. 28, 2009, and Feb. 12, 2011, and again between Dec. 23, 2013, and Sept. 22, 2014.

“Miliano failed to report any of his weekly earnings to the Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training when he called in to the RIDLT Teleserve voice response system to authorize his weekly unemployment benefits,” reads a release from Kilmartin’s office.
