MASK & MACHETE

Officer Austin Smith reported he stopped a car for not having a front license plate on Norwood Avenue around 12:25 a.m. on Feb. 15. Smith said the car reeked of burnt marijuana and he asked the driver to step out. He said the driver told him it was his car and that he lived on Norwood Avenue, but the registration did not come back to the name he gave and the driver could not show him a bill of sale. He said the driver failed to make eye contact with him and was very nervous. He said the driver had a suspended license and he was arrested and placed in Smith’s cruiser while Smith did an inventory search of the car. He said he found no narcotics in the car but did find an Iron Man-style mask with a machete right beside it. Smith said the driver denied the mask and knife belonged to him and told him he didn’t know to whom they belonged. He denied being involved in any illegal activities, including robberies and then refused to talk about the knife and the mask. He was charged with possessing an illegal weapon other than a firearm. Christian M. Pena, 19, of 164 Norwood Ave. in Cranston was later released on $1,000 personal recognizance.
