INVASION

Officer Ryan Shore reports responding along with several units to Crawford Street at approximately 9 p.m. on April 13 for a report of a home invasion. Dispatch advised that the caller stated two females had entered the residence, attempted to rob the occupants and demanded money, before exiting the home and entering a green BMW SUV that was still on the street.

Shore and Officer Matthew Schaffran were the first to arrive on scene, and reportedly found the BMW parked facing westbound in the 50 block of Crawford Street. The officers found four occupants inside, including a man and three women. Shore reports exiting his unmarked cruiser and drawing his service weapon, and giving loud verbal commands for the occupants to show their hands, with which they complied. The occupants of the vehicle were then removed and handcuffed.

Shore reports then responding to the home and meeting with the victim, a woman who was visibly shaken and upset by the incident. He reports the woman said she was acquainted with two of the women in the vehicle, and that she had been watching television when the two women entered the home without permission.

The woman told Shore that the two intruders got within inches of her and began yelling and screaming over $60 that had been previously borrowed. The woman reportedly told the intruders she only had $30 of the money, after which an argument ensued and the intruders reportedly began to punch and kick the woman in her legs and arms. The woman told Shore she fought back to defend herself, at which point one of the intruders ran from the residence. The woman also said when she went to pick up a phone to call 911, the other intruder ripped it from her hand before also leaving the home. The woman then called 911.

The woman filled out a written statement, Shore reports, and indicated a desire to press charges.

The officer does note the woman did not have any visible injuries as a result of the alleged assault.

Schaffran then reportedly told Shore a search of the suspect vehicle yielded three prescription pill bottles that belonged to the resident of the home. The resident reportedly told the officers she was unaware the intruders had been able to take the pills.

Janice Flynn, 49, and Jessica L. Gianfrancesco, 26, both of 126 Garden St. in Cranston, were both charged with one count each of burglary, conspiracy, simple assault and battery and disorderly conduct. Gianfrancesco was also held on an active warrant out of Third District Court on a previous charge.

HEROIN FOUND

At approximately 4:34 p.m. on April 17, Officer Anthony J. Sassone-McHugh reports responding to the Burger King at 200 Phenix Ave. for a report of an employee suspected of stealing money from co-workers’ pockets. Dispatch had advised the suspect was still at the scene.

Upon arrival, Sassone-McHugh spoke with the manager, who said that at approximately 4 p.m. she had been advised that an employee was missing $100 from a wallet. When the employees were gathered together to be advised of the situation, the manager told police, another employee advised he was missing $35 from his wallet. No one confessed to taking the money, according to the manager, and she said she would contact police. At that point, the second employee reportedly asked to leave, but the manager denied the request.

The manager told police that the assistant manager told her the second employee had been observed in a vehicle with an unidentified man prior to the group gathering.

Sassone-McHugh reportedly called for another officer for backup. When that officer arrived, they asked to speak with the second employee in private. Sassone-McHugh said he advised the man some of his fellow co-workers had accused him of stealing the $100 from the first employee, and “before I could ask him any questions he immediately denied it.”

The assistant manager then asked to speak with Sassone-McHugh privately, and reportedly told him she had witnessed the second employee throw something into a box above the hand sink prior to officers’ arrival. Upon examining the box, she reportedly found a small baggie containing a white, powdery substance, which Sassone-McHugh reports he immediately identified as heroin.

The second employee was arrested and briefly questioned on the larceny. He reportedly told police he did not steal anything, and that they could “check the cameras” to back up his story.

Sassone-McHugh obtained witness statements while the other officer transported the second employee to police headquarters. Later, Sassone-McHugh reports, a drug kit identified the substance found at the Burger King as heroin.

Sassone-McHugh also reports that later, the second employee admitted to stealing the $100 during questioning.

Tyler J. Daniels, 21, of 28 Connecticut St. in Cranston, was charged with larceny under $1,500.

DUI CHARGE

Officer Lee Sohn reports being on a drunk driving detail with Officer Wayne Decosta at approximately 11:23 p.m. on April 11 when, while traveling southbound on Route 95, he observed a Dodge Avenger with Rhode Island registration swaying in the lane of traffic and hugging the breakdown fog lane in the far right-hand southbound lane. The vehicle was traveling approximately 50 mph in a 55 mph zone, the officer reports.

The officers activated their cruiser’s emergency lights and siren, and the Dodge reportedly continued southbound, taking the Route 37 west exit and almost striking a guardrail as it continued at lower speed. The vehicle then took the Pontiac Avenue exit, Sohn reports, stopping at the bottom of the exit before turning right and stopping in a parking lot on Pontiac.

Sohn reportedly approached the driver’s side of the vehicle and made contact with the operator, who was smoking a cigarette. The woman reportedly said she was coming from a friend’s house and admitted to drinking wine and taking Xanax.

Sohn reports the woman slurred some letters and forgot the letter after ‘V’ when asked to recite the alphabet. The officer then asked the woman to exit the vehicle and she complied, although she reportedly had to pull herself out of the vehicle using the door. The officer then told the woman he wanted to conduct a field sobriety test, and she reportedly replied that she was familiar with the process because she had previously been arrested for DUI and had just gotten her license back.

Sohn reports the operator swayed and had trouble maintaining balance during the field sobriety test, and that he detected an odor of alcohol on the woman’s breath. At that point, the woman was arrested on a charge of suspicion of driving under the influence.

Sohn reports that the vehicle was towed from the scene, but a search of the vehicle prior to that revealed a clear plastic bag containing a green leafy substance consistent with marijuana. It later tested positive for marijuana, Sohn reports, and weighed approximately 5.9 grams.

The woman was transported to Cranston headquarters, where she refused a chemical test. Sohn reports that issues with the state records system at the time prevented him from confirming the woman had a previous DUI.

Kristen L. Schober, 29, of 10 Hillcrest Drive in West Warwick, was charged with driving under the influence-1st offense with blood alcohol content unknown and refusal to submit to a chemical test-second offense. She was also issued a citation for possession of one ounce or less of marijuana.

Schober was later released when a friend arrived to pick her up.
