HEROIN BUST

A weeks-long drug investigation culminated last week with the arrested of an alleged heroin dealer and the seizure of approximately 15 grams of the substance, according to police.

Jarrett Benton, 43, of 497 Farmington Ave., is charged with possession of heroin with intent to distribute and resisting arrest. He was arraigned Jan. 16 and ordered held without bail.

Authorities said over “the past several weeks,” the Cranston Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit probed Benton’s alleged heroin sales. Information developed during the investigation allowed detectives to obtain a search warrant for Benton’s home, which was executed Jan. 15.

Police said Benton attempted to flee the scene when police arrived, but was apprehended after a brief struggle.

The search is said to have yielded 24 individually wrapped bags of heroin for a total of roughly 15 grams, two digital scales, three cellular phones, bags used to package narcotics, and a large bag containing a suspected cutting agent. Police additionally seized Benton’s 2006 Toyota Avalon.

Police said Benton has a “long criminal history,” including mostly narcotics-related offenses. He was serving a suspended sentence at the time of the arrest.

MOLESTATION CHARGE

Jesse Sweetloice, 34, of 1494 Broad St. in Providence, was indicted for first-degree child molestation on Jan. 16.

The Providence County Grand Jury charged that Sweetloice molested a person 14 years of age or under in July of last year. The alleged molestation took place in Cranston, and the Cranston Police Department conducted the investigation.

Sweetloice is scheduled to be arraigned in Superior Court on Feb. 4. Records show he has numerous prior arrests dating back to 2001, mostly for drugs and domestic assault.
