Former Cranston East standout John Razzino etched his name into the history books two weeks ago by setting a new single-season record on the basepaths for Franklin Pierce and helping the Ravens to complete a doubleheader sweep of American International College.
The junior speed demon did not give the AIC battery a moment’s peace in the second half of the twin-bill, stealing five bases to take his season total to 33 and thus brushing aside the previous mark of 32 swipes by Cliff Hicks in the 2009 season.
Razzino also contributed to the Ravens’ cause at the plate by going 2-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in as Franklin Pierce rode the crest of a six-run third inning to a 15-8 triumph over the Yellowjackets to go along with their 4-3 victory in the first contest.
Since the record-breaking moment, Razzino has added one more steal to his total, giving him 34 on the season. The ex-Thunderbolt had stolen 18 bases in a row without being caught until a game against Merrimack on April 10.
Notes
Cranston native and current Johnson & Wales shortstop Lou Umberto was named Great Northeast Athletic Conference rookie of the week for the week ending March 30. The Hendricken alum has four doubles on the season, good for a four-way tie for the team lead . . . On the softball field, Taylor Messier currently leads Roger Williams in stolen bases with eight, while also chipping in with five doubles for the Hawks. Messier, who attended Mount St. Charles and calls Cranston home, has also chipped in with 10 runs driven in, one of five players to reach double figures . . . Former Cranston West standout Taryn Carbone is once again standing between the pipes for the Rhode Island College women’s lacrosse team this spring. In seven games so far in 2014, Carbone has chalked up 58 saves for the Anchorwomen, who have had five Cranstonians log playing time to date.
