Richard A. Gammell

Richard A. Gammell, 83, died Wednesday, July 15, 2015.

Born in Providence, RI, he was the son of the late Walter and Madeline (Bemis) Gammell. He was a former member of Phillips Memorial Baptist Church, Cranston and currently of First Baptist Church in Wickford, where he had served in various leadership positions. He was a Mason and a 50-year member of St. Johns Lodge #1 Providence. His other Masonic memberships included the Scottish Rite Valley of Providence and the Rhode Island Shriners where he played in the Shrine Golf League.

Richard served his country in the Army. He was a State Representative from Cranston for four terms; was a member of the Cranston Rotary Club and he coached hockey for CLCF (Squirts). He graduated from Cranston High School in 1950; from the University of Rhode Island in 1957 and was a lifelong Rhody Rams fan. Richard was employed as a career independent insurance agent.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Breta (Brown) Gammell; three daughters: Susan Robinson and her husband, Mark of Cranston, Deborah Wagner and her husband, Brian of Narragansett and Pamela Hallagan and her husband, Stuart Hallagan III of East Greenwich; six grandchildren: Jennifer Robinson; Cole, Laine and Dolci Wagner; Stuart IV and Spencer Hallagan. Richard was the brother of the late Robert L. Gammell and Dorothy Toll.

Calling hours will be held on Monday, July 20 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at Carpenter-Jenks Funeral Home & Crematory, 659 East Greenwich Avenue, West Warwick. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 21st at First Baptist Church in Wickford, 44 Main Street, North Kingstown, RI. Burial will be private.
