Cousineau rolls to Bronco Invitational title

Cranston East senior Shayna Cousineau has been tearing up cross country courses all over the state this fall.

She secured her second individual title of the month over the weekend, outpacing the field easily at Burrillville’s Bronco Invitational with a time of 18 minutes, 58 seconds, holding off second-place Victoria Thurley of North Smithfield by one minute, 25 seconds.

Her victory at the Providence Columbus Day cross country championship on Oct. 10 was even more impressive.

Cousineau easily won that race, as well, but it was her margin of victory that was worth noting, defeating second-place Emily Pinch of Prout by two minutes, 39 seconds.

Cousineau will look to carry her success into Saturday for the class championships at 10 a.m. at Ponaganset.

She will then look to improve on her 39th-place finish at the state meet last year when Cousineau runs in this year’s state meet at Ponaganset next Sunday at 2 p.m.

’Bolts bounce back

After dropping a lopsided game at the hands of unbeaten La Salle the previous week, the Cranston East football team returned to form on Saturday morning, cruising to a 43-0 victory over Barrington at Cranston Stadium.

East created an insurmountable lead by halftime, notching 16 points in the first quarter and 14 in the second to go up, 30-0, by the break.

Junior quarterback Justin Neary rushed for one touchdown and threw for two more, connecting with Isaiah Hinds and Robenson Antoine to get on the board early and often.

East’s defense was relentless in the shutout, even getting in on the scoring, with Brendan Lanigan scooping a fumble and taking it to the end zone.

Antoine added a second receiving touchdown after halftime, reeling in a pass from Steve Alvarez and finding pay dirt.

Randy Duran accounted for East’s last touchdown, sprinting in from eight yards out.

East is now 4-1 in Division I-B and will look to keep its winning ways going when it travels to Toppa Field in Newport at 7 p.m. on Friday to take on Rogers (2-3).
