The Cranston East girls’ basketball team was the only Division II squad among the Final Four at the Ryan Center this winter, and its linchpin was point guard Sarah Coutu.
Coutu led the team in scoring with 12.5 points as the ’Bolts torched Division II with a 17-1 regular season record. Despite falling in the first round of the D-II playoffs, Coutu led East to a berth in the statewide Final Four with wins over Cumberland and St. Ray’s. She averaged 13 points across those two games, including a 17-point outburst against the Saints.
Coutu will have to be the glue of the squad again next season as the ’Bolts prepare to move back up to Division I. Her 2015-16 performance, which yielded a Second Team All-State selection, leaves little doubt she can be a top-tier, D-I player.
