Students at St. Mary’s Parochial School in Cranston re-created figures like those in the famous Madame Tussauds Wax Museum in London on Monday in celebration of National Catholic Education Week.
Alessandra Muccio, who is both technology and Italian language teacher at St. Mary’s, started the project in her technology class. She wanted to teach youngsters how to find information on the Internet and how to distinguish between what is true and what is false.
Students were to choose a famous person, look up information online and then write an essay on that person. They could pick anyone they liked, provided that person had a positive influence.
Ending the project, students dressed up as wax-museum figures of those people, complete with makeup and costumes. When someone pushed a “button” on their arm, the figure came to life, giving a 30-second narrative telling who they are and why they are famous.
Altogether, there were about 65 figures from sports, entertainment, history and science, each with their own costume and story.
Parents were using words like “incredible” and “wonderful” to describe the show.
“It was an amazing experience,” said Muccio. “I am so proud of the kids. They went above and beyond and they ended up being so much more magical than I expected.”
