Stanton twins help pace Rams’ hot start

Posted

Cranston West graduates Alex and Ariana Stanton have helped the Rhode Island women’s soccer team get off to a flying start, with one playing a key part in the Rams’ attack.

Ariana has started her junior year in fine form, notching three goals and a pair of assists in eight matches, both placing her in a tie for the team lead.

Not to be outdone, her twin sister Alex has also appeared in all eight contests to date for Rhody, but unlike Ariana, has largely stayed at the back for the Rams, helping to hold the opposition to one goal or less in all but one match thus far.

Of the three tallies that Ariana has notched, none has proved to be more important than a header from 12 yards out that settled affairs in overtime in an August 31 encounter versus Manhattan that was previously scoreless to that point.

Just under halfway through the 18-match regular season, the URI eleven has already equaled last year’s win total in compiling a 6-1-1 record that has seen the Rams enter the National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s top ten for the Mid-Atlantic region.

Despite the early promise, a significant speed bump in the form of the Atlantic 10 portion of the schedule is now looming on the horizon for Rhode Island.

The Rams were picked to finish next-to-last in the 14-team loop prior to the start of the season in the preseason coaches’ poll, only out-polling Fordham by one point.

Big summer for Razzino

Former Cranston East standout John Razzino had a wildly successful summer playing for the Amsterdam Mohawks of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League, helping his team to a third consecutive league championship.

The former Thunderbolt, who spent the spring setting new records on the basepaths for Franklin Pierce, showed a different side to his game while in upstate New York.

Razzino hit at a .370 clip during the regular season while clubbing five home runs, the latter placing him in a tie for the team lead.

As for fears that his speed would be diminished, those were proved to be unfounded as the moonlighting Raven swiped 23 bases from 26 attempts.

For his efforts, Razzino was named the PGCBL’s player of the week twice during the course of the campaign and was selected as a second-team summer league All-American by the PerfectGame.org web site.
