Under a beautiful summer sky, the Budlong Pool officially opened for the season last week.
Budlong is one of the largest outdoor public pools in the country, and takes just more than one million gallons of water to fill. A familiar scene unfolded at this year’s opening, with residents lined up to make their splash into the pool, some for the very first time.
“For more than 60 years, Budlong Pool has been a cornerstone of the city’s commitment to providing top-quality recreational activities for Cranston families,” said Mayor Allan Fung, who led the opening day festivities. “My administration has invested in numerous repairs and maintenance to keep the pool up and running as a quality, affordable summer retreat for Cranston families, and I want to thank Director Tony Liberatore and the entire Parks and Recreation Department for helping to provide the quality recreational facilities and programs that help to make Cranston one of America’s 50 Best Cities in which to live for the second year in a row.”
Located at 198 Aqueduct Road, the pool is open from the last weekend of June until the third week of August. There is ample parking. Hours are noon to 6 p.m., seven days a week.
Seasonal passes are available for Cranston residents only, and can be bought during regular pool hours. They cost $50 for a family season pass, $25 for an individual pass, and $20 for seniors. A day pass costs $3. Nonresidents can buy a day pass for $10.
Swimming lessons are available for children. Residents may bring their own chairs, although the Parks and Recreation Department is not responsible for personal property brought to the pool. There are some chairs provided around the pool.
For additional information, contact the Parks and Recreation Department at 401-780-6169. During the months of July and August when the pool is open, it can be reached directly at 401-383-3105.
