(Amoral, intense gangster movie)

You are not going to like most of the characters in this intense gangster movie filled with amoral thugs, including Marv (the late James Gandolfini), owner of a “Drop Bar” in a seedy section of Brooklyn, where gambling money is laundered.

The story gets a bit confusing at times and the characters are so untrustworthy that it is hard to predict what they will do next, which is also what makes the movie so intense.

At the center of the story is Bob, the bartender at his cousin Marv’s bar. On the surface, Bob is a gentle man who seems to mind his own business as he observes what is going on around him. He rescues an injured pit bull puppy from a garbage can, befriends Nadia, a sad-eyed neighbor (Noomi Rapace) and goes to Mass every morning.

But in this movie everybody, including Bob, has a dark side. It is all about fear and respect.

When the bar gets robbed and the gang leaders lose big money, all hell breaks loose. Who would be crazy enough to rob from the notorious Chechen gang? Was it an inside job?

The action gets very violent and people are made to pay for their transgressions. Tension builds to the final brutal scene.

“The Drop” is not a movie for everyone, but if you like to be kept guessing and enjoy the tension that the constant intimidation of the characters presents, you’ll like “The Drop.”
