(Dumb comedy

with a message)

Kevin Hart has toned done his act a notch (just a notch), playing Jimmy, the Wedding Ringer, in this dumb comedy with a message about caring for yourself and others.

Josh Gad plays the nerdy Doug, who is about to get married but hasn’t a friend in the world. Doug hires Jimmy, who has established a lucrative business: Providing a best man and ushers to fill out the wedding party and make the groom look like a hero. While Jimmy creates a believable act, he makes it clear that this is all a game and he wants to severe the relationship after the “I do’s.” You can see where this is going when he is asked who he would choose as his best man and draws a blank.

For Doug, the preparations with Jimmy and the motley crew he has assembled for the wedding party are the happiest moments of his life.

There are some ridiculous scenes as the guys learn their parts and “bond,” including a long dance sequence, a vulgar bachelor party and a dumb football game, thrown in to stretch the thin plot to an hour and 40 minutes. There are some clever touches as the ceremony begins and ends in chaos, but getting there is pretty dumb and banal.

Rated R, profanity, sex and below the belt humor.
