Taco recognized with export award

Two of Rhode Island’s companies have been recognized, together with 123 companies and organizations nationwide, as recipients of the President’s “E” Award for exporting excellence during a ceremony in Washington, D.C.

Companies and organizations receiving the honor include Cranston-based Taco Comfort Solutions and Smithfield-based John H. Chafee Center for International Business at Bryant University. Representatives from each company were presented the “E” Award from Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker for their significant contributions to increasing America’s overall exports over a four-year period.

“Congratulations to Taco Comfort Solutions and the John H. Chafee Center for International Business for their achievements in exporting,” Pritzker said. “The recipients being honored today demonstrate the opportunity inherent in selling Made-in-America products to the broad customer base that exists outside our borders. Their success contributes to growth, job creation, competitiveness, and the success of the American economy.”

John Hazen White Jr., Taco Inc.’s chairman and CEO, said his company was honored to be selected for the prestigious award, commenting: “As a company that earned one of the original ‘E’ Awards at the very end of World War II for excellence in war production, it’s very gratifying to be so honored again. And I’m pleased to note that the company my father ran then is very much the same company today, 71 years later.”

Keith Yatsuhashi, director of the U.S. Commercial Service Rhode Island office, said this type of recognition highlights how hard businesses in the state of Rhode Island are working to be successful in a globalized economy.

“Congratulations to Taco Inc. and The John H. Chafee Center for International Business on their well-deserved ‘E’ Awards,” Yatsuhashi said. “Both companies have played a crucial role in strengthening and growing our economy through increased U.S. exports, and they should be proud of this extraordinary achievement.”

The “E” Award ceremony is one of the highlights of World Trade Month, a month-long celebration of the benefits that U.S. exports bring to national, state, and local economies through job creation and growth.
