Townies get the best of West in D-I tilt

Posted

The Cranston West football team fell at East Providence High School on Friday night, 19-12, to fall to 1-6 in Division I on the season.

West got touchdowns from Steve Furtado and Raekwon Kisilywicz, but it wasn’t enough, as Townies’ running back Trystan Casey scored on touchdowns on 10 and 60 yards to give East Providence its second league win of the season.

The Falcons trailed 13-12 heading into the fourth quarter, but a 1-yard touchdown run from Justin Johnson put the game away for the Townies.

West will wrap up league play at Portsmouth on Saturday at 1:30 p.m., before facing off against intra-city foe Cranston East in the annual Thanksgiving game on November 27 at 10 a.m.

Cranston East freshmen football falls in semis

After putting together a 5-2 regular season, the third-seeded Cranston East freshmen football team fell at No. 2 Bishop Hendricken on Friday afternoon, 20-16.

The ‘Bolts put together a good showing though, as East fell to the Hawks on the road, 24-0, in the regular season a month prior to Friday’s semifinal game.

Hendricken will meet top-seeded La Salle Academy for the Division I state title on Saturday at 12 p.m. at Cranston Stadium.

Principe top R.I. finisher at New England’s

Cranston-native and La Salle standout, D.J. Principe, finished sixth at the New England Cross Country Championships, held at Wickham Park in Manchester, Conn. this past weekend.

Principe, who captured the state title two weekends ago, was Rhode Island’s top finisher once again at the regional event.

Thanks in large part to Principe’s performance, La Salle was able to capture regional titles for both genders, marking the first time that this has happened in the race’s history.

A strong contingent of La Salle girl runners, led by Eliza Rego and Karina Tavares, who finished fifth and sixth respectively, clinched the regional title for the La Salle girls.

State champion Emma McMillan of Barrington High School was the top girls runner in the regional event, placing fourth overall.
