Cranston West alum Bobby Allen showed no signs of rust in his first cross country race in two years last Saturday, winning the Iona Meet of Champions in the Bronx with a time of 25 minutes, 32.8 seconds.

Allen, who now represents UMass-Lowell, ran with the lead pack for most of the 8-kilometer race before pulling away in the closing stages to take home top honors by a nine-second margin.

The former Falcon’s effort also helped the River Hawks to a fourth-place finish in the team competition, behind Brown, Fordham and winners Arkansas.

Allen’s performance also netted him national recognition with the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association tabbing the senior as their Division I national athlete of the week.

 Notes

Ex-Falcon Stefano Marziale has placed four punts inside the 20 for Anna Maria, who finish the non-conference portion of their schedule this weekend versus Catholic . . . Former Cranston West standout Anthony St. Laurent recorded one tackle in Rhode Island’s 37-20 loss to Albany on Saturday and now has 11 on the season.
