We can’t afford to stifle job opportunities

To the Editor:

I was glad to see the business community is rallying in support of independent contractors. Hopefully their action will send a much-needed signal to the General Assembly that they should be making it easier – not harder – for Rhode Islanders to get back to work.

Independent contractors are not only realtors, hair stylists and truck drivers, they’re also people who are doing part-time work or taking short-term assignments while looking for full-time jobs. In this economy, we can’t afford to stifle any kind of job opportunity.

It’s time for lawmakers to stop attacking independent contractors through frivolous legislation and work with the business community to ensure all entrepreneurs have a chance to grow and prosper. To move Rhode Island’s economy forward, we must ensure the business environment is friendly for anyone wanting to operate and contribute here.
