West making D-I headway

The state’s top division has never been the most hospitable place for the Cranston West boys’ tennis team. The Falcons have had big success in Division II – they won the title in 2012 – but anytime they’ve been bumped to Division I, they’ve struggled.

So far this season, they’re holding their own more than usual. With three wins in its first six matches, West has already bested its last four Division I seasons, where it didn’t get past two wins. The Falcons have matched the 2007 team’s win total and will have a shot at their best D-I season since 2006, when they went 6-7.

The Falcons have held tough by beating the teams that are comparable to them. They beat Lincoln and Ponaganset by 7-0 scores and breezed past Westerly by a 6-1 margin. Mixed in have been losses to La Salle, Smithfield and Bishop Hendricken.

Chris Parnagian owns four victories for the Falcons to lead the way in the singles ranks. Jacob Meyerson and Matt Davis have three wins and Ben Marcotte has two.

The Falcons have used a variety of doubles combinations. Adam Parnagian and Anthony Simeone have teamed up for two victories. Parnagian and Weston DeLomba, Simeone and Nick Manzi, Matt McDonough and Kyle Rush, Manzi and McDonough and Dennis Zhitkovich and Eric Pjojian have also joined up for wins.

West was set to play North Kingstown on Tuesday with results unavailable at press time. Next Tuesday, the Falcons will visit East Greenwich.

Falcons roll on

Cranston West won the Little Rhody Invitational two weeks ago and had no trouble carrying the momentum into league play last week. The Falcons beat Scituate 3-1 and Mt. Pleasant 3-0 to improve to 5-1 on the season.

Against Scituate, West had to scratch and claw for a 27-25 win in game one. It won 25-20 in game two but watched Scituate fight back to win the third game. In game four, though, West surged to a 25-16 win.

The Falcons then cruised past one-win Mt. Pleasant with 25-15, 25-10 and 25-14 victories.

Heading into Tuesday’s match against North Smithfield, West had the fourth-best record in Division II.
