West stays perfect, sweeps East

To say that the Cranston West volleyball team has been perfect thus far this spring would be accurate.

Going into Friday night’s rivalry matchup with Cranston East, the Falcons had won all 21 sets that they had played in, compiling a perfect 7-0 record.

And that torrid pace wouldn’t be altered against the ’Bolts, as West rolled to a 3-0 sweep with 25-21, 25-13 and 25-19 victories.

With the win, West ballooned its lead in Division II-South to 2 1/2 games over second-place East.

The Falcons are now one of only two teams with a perfect record in Division II. Undefeated Central currently sits atop Division II-North, but it has yielded one set, opposed to West, which had taken 24 of 24 games after downing East.

“We don’t give any games away,” West head coach Roger Tow said. “Against Cranston East, in the first game, I thought we were in trouble, and we responded.”

East jumped out to an early lead in the opening game on Friday, and led for a majority of that first game thanks in large part to seven kills from senior Isaiah Monteiro.

But a kill from Andrew Albro knotted the game at 17, and West would finish strong from there.

Brett Bucci and Ryan Murphy clinched crucial points down the stretch, and Christian Martinelli posted the game-ending kill to give the Falcons a 25-21 win and a 1-0 lead in the match.

In Game 2, West’s depth was on display.

Captain Matt Sepe helped West build an 8-3 lead with an ace, and he would continue to give East fits when a block at the net later in the game pushed the Falcons’ advantage out to 20-9.

Martinelli posted another kill late in the game, and Bucci posted a pair of thunderous kills to clinch a 25-13 victory.

“We work on things in practice, so we feel confident doing them in the game,” Tow said. “I thought we did that today. We got into some tight spots at times, but we were ready.”

East would rally in the third game, but West halted any momentum that East was looking to establish in front of its packed gym.

A kill from Andrew Khvang gave East an 11-9 lead, before West took over.

A block from Murphy gave West a 14-11 lead, and its dominance only continued from there. It took the next four points, triggering East head coach Tom Paquette to call a timeout after a 12-2 West run.

“We know that, whether it’s at our place or theirs, we always have our work cut out for us [against West],” Paquette said. “We didn’t rise up to the challenge today.”

The ’Bolts showed some life out of the timeout, but ultimately couldn’t sustain a comeback, falling to West 25-19 in Game 3 and 3-0 in the match.

After senior captain David Anthony graduated following last spring, West has been forced to play more of a team game, not looking to just one player for a bulk of the production.

Rather, Murphy, Sepe, Bucci, Martinelli and Albro, in particular, have stepped up and have built a visible chemistry.

“This year, we definitely have more offense, we spread the offense,” Tow said. “Last year, we definitely did rely on David. This year, we really had to match up in the middle.”

As for East, it is still in a good spot in the standings, and Paquette will be looking for his young team to improve as the playoffs approach.

“It is a little disappointing,” Paquette said of Friday’s result. “You would like to make a statement in the bigger matches, but I don’t want to look at it in a negative way. We’re having a great season so far, and if we want to have a long run, we need to make errors, learn where our weaknesses are and grow from that.”

East would bounce back with a 3-0 sweep of Westerly on Monday night to improve to 6-2. It was scheduled to travel to Warwick Vets on Wednesday, but results were unavailable at press time.

West continued its winning ways with a 3-0 sweep at West Warwick on Monday. It will look to improve to 10-0 on Friday, when it travels to Toll Gate for a 6:30 p.m. start.

West and East will meet again in the season finale for both teams on May 18 – with senior night ceremonies for the Falcons preceding the match.

“I know we’ll see them again,” Tow said. “Definitely again in the regular season for our senior night, but probably again in the playoffs. I expect them to be on the other side of the net again.”
