Youngsters meet idol as Kwan visits Glen Hills

The students and staff were abuzz with excitement as Olympic medalist Michelle Kwan made her last school-year stop in Cranston at Glen Hills Elementary School.

As she spoke to the students about the importance of education and goals in their lives, she asked them if the end of the school year was near.

“How many days do you have left? A week?” Kwan asked. “But who’s counting?”

Kwan made the rounds to several different classrooms while visiting Glen Hills, speaking to two third-grade classes and two fifth-grade classes. She also spent a great deal of time speaking to several staff members, many of whom followed her Olympic career very closely and idolized her themselves during that time.

Additionally, Kwan had a special moment with Danielle Hughes, a fourth-grade student in Amy Gearings class. Although Kwan was not visiting Hughes class at the time, she spotted a soda bottle project on display in the school library that had been designed by Hughes to look just like Kwan.

Thrilled, Kwan took a photo of the soda bottle skater, and later one with Hughes herself. As part of the project, Hughes had to do in-depth research about Kwan in addition to creating the handmade likeness of the skater.

When asked if she had any questions for her idol, Hughes thought for a moment and said, “No, I know everything about her.”
