Anderson returns to lead Park View into future

Each year, as a service to our readers, The Cranston Herald provides readers with a listing of the administrators running each of the Cranston Public Schools as well as a quick introduction to any new building administrators. This year there is one new building administrator in the schools: Cheryl Anderson has taken over as principal at Park View Middle School. Anderson is no stranger to the Cranston Public Schools, having attended since elementary school, through middle and high school, and now leads as principal at the school where she was once a student.

“I was the assistant principal at Bain when I arrived as an educator in the Cranston Public Schools. I was there for several years, Anderson said. I then became the principal at Eden Park Elementary School and I was grateful to the superintendent at the time for having faith in me to take that next step.” From there, she became an assistant principal at Cranston High School West, which was an important step for her professionally, providing her with a complete look at what students need in their journey from kindergarten through high school. However, Anderson’s heart has always been at the middle school level, where she once taught, and she waited for an opportunity to arise where she could take that next step and lead a middle school, particularly waiting for a principal position to open up at her own former middle school, Park View.

“Middle school is my home, my favorite time as a student, so I’m so excited to be here at Park View,” she said, noting that she has already seen a lot of children whose parents she went to school with. In looking at the year ahead, Anderson hopes to continue all of the community involvement that Park View has been involved with.

“Our school is so open to providing experiences for our community and for our students to see the importance of contributing to their community,” she said. “We will continue to foster those types of opportunities and grow those types of experiences.” In the area of academics, Anderson looks forward to the continued focus on the blended learning initiative that the Cranston Public Schools has been involved in.

“We will continue to nurture and grow that collaborative thinking mindset and continue to use technology to enhance learning,” she said. “The new middle school pathways programs are going to be phenomenal. We have a lot of new technology in for some of these new programs, including 60 new computers, two new computer carts and a 3D printer. We even have mannequins for the CPR class.” Anderson is looking forward to collaborating with her staff and with her administrative team, including new dean of students Ryan Kavanagh and assistant principal Kerrilyn Reagan.

“We make a great team,” she said. She is also anticipating being able to use a great deal of what she learned recently as a LeadRI program participant, which was a year-long professional development opportunity for administrators from the National Institute for School Leadership. Anderson participated in monthly professional development meetings as part of a cohort of 17 school leaders from around the state, doing in-depth research about world class educational systems, desired outcomes for local educational systems, and distributive leadership from organizations such as the military, schools and businesses. She is now trained as a facilitator for future cohorts.

“This change couldn’t have happened at a better time,” she said. “I’m so excited to be back at the middle level.” ***
