In celebration of National Poetry Month, the Cranston Public Library will host a poetry reading on Tuesday, April 30, from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Central Library, 140 Sockanosset Cross Road. The poetry reading will feature local authors Laura Marie Marciano, Peter Covino and Luisa Murillo reading their own work.

Marciano is a managing editor for Barrow Street, a nonprofit literary arts organization. She is the author of 2016’s “Mall Brat” from publisher Civil Coping Mechanisms. Interested in the relationship between art and commodity, she promotes intertextual poetry through her media collective gemstone readings and co-curates a multi-disciplined, experiential poetry exhibition series at Artbook at MoMA PS1 with the design partnership LAMM. She has performed at A.I.R. Gallery, Brooklyn Museum, Brown University, Silent Barn and elsewhere. After earning an MFA in performance and interactive media art at Brooklyn College, she pursued her PhD in creative writing at the University of Rhode Island.

Covino, a prize-winning poet, translator and editor, is associate professor of English and creative writing at URI. He is the author of two poetry collections – “The Right Place to Jump” (2012) and “Cut Off the Ears of Winter” (2005), both from W. Michigan University Press, New Issues. Recent poems appeared in such places Academy of American Poets’ Poem-a day, American Poetry Review, Atelier, Cincinnati Review, Colorado Review, Gulf Coast, Hayden’s Ferry Review, Journal of Italian Translation, The Yale Review and The Penguin Anthology of Italian-American Writing, among others.

Murillo is director of social programs at Progreso Latino, a Central Falls nonprofit that helps Latino and immigrant communities. She is a 2019 recipient of the MacColl Johnson Fellowship for writers administered by the Rhode Island Foundation.

Murillo is working on a manuscript that includes English, Spanish, and the indigenous language Quechua, and hopes to promote appreciation of Bolivian culture.
