Hawks cruise past West, 12-1

The Bishop Hendricken baseball team continued to roll this spring with a 12-2 win over Cranston West last week. Scoreless heading into the third, the Hawks would explode for a five-run inning, then would get a six-run fourth inning to break the score open and put away the win in five innings. Matt Venuto led Hendricken at the dish with four RBI, while Will Panarello and also added multiple RBI. Noah Cook and Tom Barbieri would drive in West’s lone runs in the third and sixth innings. The Hawks’ offense continued to shine in the win, as it has now averaged nearly 10 runs per game in it’s last seven outings. “Hopefully (this is sustainable). We have a good hitting team, but good pitching can shut any team down. Our lineup is good, 1-9 they can hit. Hopefully they can keep this going,” said Hendricken coach Ed Holloway after the win. Lefty Randy Reyes continued to be a force for Hendricken on the mound, going all five innings and holding the Falcons to two runs on just four hits while striking out seven batters. “Randy has pitched well for us all year, we can pitch really well,” said Holloway, who likes his team’s balance across the board. “The combination we have between our pitching, are hitting and our defense, we have a really good lineup. Hopefully we can continue to improve and be playing our best baseball late in the year.” The Falcons came within arms’ reach of handing Hendricken its first loss the first time these two clubs met, however, the Hawks managed to pull out the 7-6 win. Playing tighter defense was the biggest difference between the two outings, according to Holloway. “It was a really sloppy game. We made four errors, so we worked really hard on our defense at practice since then. When you pitch well, hit the ball and play good defense, you have a chance to win in every game that you play. I thought we put it all together in all three facets today and I was happy to see that,” said Holloway. The Hawks remain undefeated with an 11-0 record this spring and remain atop the Division I standings. Although some teams may feel the pressure of having a target on their back, Holloway believes that the Hawks are locked in and experience will help them continue their run of success into the postseason. “I don’t think there is any pressure. The kids are focused, they have a goal and they want to win,” said Holloway. “We have an older group this year with 16 seniors and They know what they want, which is to win.”
