Rhode Island Children’s Chorus

Rhode Island Children's Chorus has announced upcoming audition dates. Chamber Chorus auditions, by appointment only, will be held Thursday, June 8 from 5:30-7:00pm at the RI Philharmonic Carter Center, 667 Waterman Ave, East Providence. Contact christine@richildrenschorus.org for more information

Boys and girls ages 7-17 (four levels) are invited to meet with Director Dr. Christine Noel for a brief interview and vocal evaluation. No prior experience or appointment is needed. Auditions are private and take about 4-5 minutes. Students may audition at either location, but please specify your preferred rehearsal location (East Providence or East Greenwich). Voices of RI

The monthly meeting for Friends of the Warwick Animal Shelter will be held May 18 at the Pilgrim Senior Center, 27 Pilgrim Parkway (behind Benny’s on Warwick Avenue and near Pilgrim High School) at 6:30 p.m. This is the same location as the craft show was held May 13. Patriotic Concert

St. Kevin Church, 333 Sandy Lane, Warwick, will present a patriotic Concert May 19 at 7 p.m. in the church. The concert will feature inspirational music by the 88th Army Band with the combined choirs of St. Kevin and St. Rita churches and a special appearance by the Warwick Police and Fire Honor Guard. The concert, "Honoring Our Heroes,” is free and open to the public. A free-will donation of non-perishable food for their food pantry is appreciated.

Plant & Bake Sale

The Oakland Beach Volunteer Women’s Auxiliary, 645 Oakland Beach Ave., is having a plant and bake sale May 20 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Plants and baked goods will be for sale. All proceeds benefit our community.

Yard Sale

Asbury Methodist Church, 550 Fair St. off Narragansett Parkway, will hold a yard sale May 20 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Sale will be outside and in, weather permitting. Sale includes sports equipment, yard tools, nautical tools and equipment, regular tools, household items, linens, small furniture, some costume jewelry, electronics and a dinghy that has gone around the world (meet the man who sailed it). Ham & Bean Supper

There will be an old-fashioned ham and bean supper to benefit Unit 43 children and youth May 20 at the William Shields Jr. Post 43. Dinner featuring ham, beans, cole slaw, brown bread, coffee and pastry will be served at 6:30 p.m. There will be raffles, 50/50 and dancing until 11 p.m. Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 at the door. Village Singers

The Village Singers will present the first of their Spring Season Concerts May 23 at 7 p.m. at Spring Green Memorial Church, 1350 Warwick Ave. This is a small mixed four-part harmony group whose name is derived from Pawtuxet Village and who performs songs from the American Songbook for the public and especially for those in facilities for the elderly. Admission is free, so come and enjoy an evening of old familiar songs.

Oakland Beach in the 1960s

The upcoming exhibit, “Oakland Beach in the 1960s – Art, Society, Nature” at the Warwick Center for the Arts (WCA), will be on display May 24 through June 30. The exhibit will feature original images of Oakland Beach from that era by Carmel Vitullo, the acclaimed Rhode Island photographer, along with other images and items related to Oakland Beach and describing the artistic, social, and environmental context for her work. Memorial Day Parade Invite

The Warwick Veterans Council would like to invite the general public to attend the annual City of Warwick Memorial Day Parade. The parade is scheduled for Memorial Day, May 29, and will begin at 9:15 a.m. The parade will start at Bishop Hendricken High School and travel south down Warwick Avenue, turning west on West Shore Road and end at Warwick Vets Memorial Park (in front of Warwick Vets School). Joining the parade this year will be the Honorable Gina Raimondo, Mayor Scott Avedisian, as well as other City councilpersons and local state representatives. Church of Transfiguration Yard Sale

Coast Guard Auxiliary Safe Boating Course

Do you need your RI State Boating Card? Want to brush up on your skills? How about getting your family involved in safe boating? Sign up for the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Boating Skills and Seamanship course starting June 5. It runs 7-9:30 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays in June at North Star Flotilla Headquarters at Brewers Greenwich Bay Marina, 1 Masthead Drive, just off Post Road in Warwick. Bird Feeder Donations

Moms for Moms/Families First RI helps pregnant women and new mothers deal with an enormous transition by matching them with trained volunteers who are mothers themselves. Mentors develop a warm, supportive relationship while spending time with the new mom in their homes, accompanying them on outings and attending mom gatherings. Volunteers Needed to Sew

Looking for something to do to help foster kids? Organizers of The Sewing Project to Help Foster Kids are looking for volunteers who want to help sew pillowcase or duffel bags for foster children. Currently their belongings are sometimes put in black trash bags. Foster parent Adriane Grimaldi in Scottsdale, Ariz. started the Sewing Project in February 2008 for children taken from their homes by Child Protective Services (CPS) to make kid-friendly bags for carrying their belongings instead of trash bags. To date, people have made 6,700 pillowcase bags for foster kids Pillowcase bags are delivered to CPS to use instead of trash bags. The Sewing Project has opened a new Rhode Island Chapter working with the Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) and is in need of volunteers to sew. Cornerstone Church

Domestic Abuse Support Groups

The Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center is a non-profit agency providing services to victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault. The agency offers morning and evening support groups for adults dealing with current or past domestic abuse Groups provide a safe place to talk with others who have shared similar experiences. Developmental Screening

The Child Outreach Department of the Warwick Public Schools, in cooperation with the Volunteers of Warwick schools (VOWS), conducts regular preschool screening clinics. All Warwick preschool children between the ages of 3 and 5 are offered the Early Screening Inventory-Revised (ESI-R). This is a free service provided by the Warwick Public Schools. Participation in a Developmental Screening is a long established program of the Warwick School Department that provides families with information about their child’s development and offers information about community resources.
